Riyadh proposes counter-terrorism center

WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- An international counter-terrorism center would boost inclusive exchanges of information to address multi-pronged threats, Saudi officials said in Washington.

Adel bin Ahmed al-Jubeir, the Saudi envoy to the United States, said information was vital in the international effort to combat terrorism.

"Information is one of the most effective weapons in fighting terrorism and nations committed to combating terrorism must do more to improve the exchange of information in order to improve public safety," he said.

The envoy added that if the international community can agree on common procedures for protecting the public through information sharing, then the security of the world would benefit.

Riyadh proposed an international counter-terrorism center to serve as a hub for the exchange of information at a counter-terrorism conference in 2005.

Jubeir said establishing the center would facilitate counter-terrorism efforts by serving as a focal point for the coordination and development of anti-terror laws and regulations.

"The purpose of the proposed center is to enhance the exchange of information between nations in a timely manner so as to allow them to take appropriate measures to face potential threats and to learn from the experiences of others," he added.
