Standoff in Thailand continues

BANGKOK, April 23 (UPI) -- The situation in Thailand remains tense after several explosions rocked Bangkok Thursday night.

No one claimed responsibility for the bombings, which the Thai government blames on unnamed terrorists, BBC News reports. While reports on the death toll varied from one to three, The Bangkok Post said more than 70 people were injured.

Riot police and Red Shirt anti-government protesters Friday were involved in a standoff that ended without clashes. But security in Bangkok remains fragile, with a large military and protester presence in the city.

An April 10 clash between the protesters and soldiers left 24 people dead.

The protesters, who are demanding new elections, have been demonstrating for about six weeks, troubling the Thai economy and its tourism industry.
