CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., April 15 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama wants U.S. astronauts to orbit Mars by the mid-2030s, he said.
The president detailed his plan for NASA's deep space exploration in a speech Thursday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Obama said he would hand the U.S. space agency an extra $6 billion over the next five years so it can achieve ambitious goals.
"By 2025, we expect new spacecraft designed for long journeys to allow us to begin the first ever crew missions beyond the moon into deep space," he said. "So, we'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history."
He added: "By the mid-2030s, I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth, and a landing on Mars will follow."
The comments come six weeks after the Obama administration said it plans to cancel development of the Constellation moon rocket program begun under former President George W. Bush.
