SIRTE, Libya, March 30 (UPI) -- Danger is imminent because of the crisis over Israeli activity in Jerusalem, the head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference said in Libya.

Delegates of the League of Arab States met in Libya for their annual summit. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the secretary-general of the OIC, told the representatives that Jerusalem is facing difficult times and imminent danger on a level not seen since the Crusades in the 11th century.

The legacy relationship between Washington and Israel is strained because of a decision by the Israeli government to build 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem.

Ihsanoglu said there was a full-blown Judaization process under way in Jerusalem, which included the construction of synagogues, the OIC said.

"What Israel is doing is flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law," said Ihsanoglu.

The secretary-general stressed that it was important to provide financial support to Arab sectors of the ancient city in order to counter Israeli efforts.

He added that continued violations by Israel in Jerusalem could trigger a backlash of violence across the world.
