Hariri warms to tribunal probes

SOFIA, Bulgaria, March 30 (UPI) -- The ruling by the tribunal probing the 2005 killing of a former Lebanese prime minister must be accepted verbatim, the current prime minister said.

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and several others were killed when a massive bomb tore through his motorcade in downtown Beirut in February 2005.

The U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon is tasked with examining the assassination. Saad Hariri, the Lebanese prime minister and son of Rafik Hariri, said during a visit to Bulgaria that STL findings must be accepted, Lebanon's Daily Star newspaper reports.

"Finally, a tribunal will try those who murdered and assassinated for political and terrorist reasons and we will accept any decision by the STL and deal with it as it is," he said.

There is no time line for the judicial work of the STL.

Media reports said the tribunal had spoke with members of Hezbollah recently regarding their probe. Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said he would issue a statement on the investigation as early as Wednesday.

Syrian elements and members of Hezbollah are believed to have played a role in the 2005 slaying.
