MOSCOW, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The Iranian envoy to Moscow said deliveries of the S-300 missile defense system for Iran are not moving forward because of "technical issues" with the contract.
Moscow and Tehran signed a deal in 2005 for the delivery of at least five S-300 systems to Iran, though the status of the contract has oscillated.
Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi, the Iranian envoy to Moscow, said Tehran was ready to receive the missile defense system, but there were contractual issues remaining, Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti reports.
"Several technical issues (in the contract's implementation) have emerged, and we hope they will be resolved soon," he said with few specifics.
The U.S. and Israeli governments have ramped up their defensive rhetoric amid stalled negotiations with Tehran over a controversial nuclear program.
Defense industry executives in Moscow said they were ready to make the deal with Iran but added the geopolitical climate loomed large in the decision to implement the contract.
The S-300 system has a range of around 120 miles and can intercept air targets at altitudes as high as 16 miles. It is comparable to the U.S. Patriot missile system.
