WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- A recent National Democratic Institute conference was designed to foster the use of new media platforms by social activists in the Middle East and North Africa.
The NDI conference, held in Istanbul, Turkey, with support from Arabic-language Web site Aswat, brought together activists from 11 countries to discuss incorporating new media technologies into a larger communication and outreach strategy.
The conference featured Web 2.0 experts including Sam Graham-Felsen, Blue State Digital content director and former Barack Obama presidential campaign director of Web content, and Alan Rosenblatt, Center for American Progress Action Fund associate director for online advocacy, among others.
The growing use of new media technologies in activist circles has proven the Internet-based tools can have a big impact on grassroots organizing and can be especially helpful in Middle Eastern and North African countries with repressive governments.
According to a news release, "leveraging new media tools to extend an issue or candidate's reach is now a necessary component of campaigns of all kinds."
