QARDAHA, Syria, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Hezbollah ministers and Lebanese political figures expressed their condolences to Syrian President Bashar Assad on the death of his younger brother.
The Syrian Arab News Agency, the state-run news media in Damascus, reported Majd Hafez Assad died during the weekend following a battle with "a long illness."
Hajj Hussen Khalil, a political adviser to Hezbollah, joined Nabih Berri, the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, in a funeral procession in the coastal city of Qardaha, the traditional home of the Assad family, Hezbollah's al-Manar news station reports.
The death leaves the Syrian president with two remaining siblings.
Syrian influence looms large in Lebanese affairs, particularly with Hezbollah and its allies. Relations thawed somewhat, however, when the international community urged Damascus to loosen its grip over Beirut following the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, the son of the former premier, had scheduled a trip to Damascus for bilateral talks, but backed away in favor of a high-ranking delegation of ministers.
Hariri left Beirut on Monday to attend the international climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.
