Iran may withhold funds to Pakistan

TEHRAN, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Iranian lawmakers Tuesday called on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to halt the delivery of financial aid to Pakistan in response to a deadly terrorist attack.

A suicide bomber set off a device in southeastern Iran, killing at least 40 people including several high-ranking Revolutionary Guards officers.

The officials were reportedly meeting with tribal leaders in Sistan-Baluchistan province Sunday when they were attacked.

Six Revolutionary Guards commanders were among the 42 people killed, official Iranian reports said.

Iran blamed elements of the Sunni Islamist group Jundallah for the attack, accusing the group of receiving support from members of the Pakistani intelligence services.

Heshmatollah Falahat-Pishe, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian Parliament, blamed Pakistan for the attack, saying Ahmadinejad should withhold the $300 million in aid slated for the country, Iran's Press TV reports.

"The Pakistani intelligence agency is the main supporter of terrorism in the region," the lawmaker stressed.

Jundallah claimed responsibility for a June attack at the Ali Ibn Abi Taleb mosque in Sistan-Baluchistan province that killed as many as 21 and wounded more than 70 others.
