UNIFIL reacts to Lebanese rocket fire

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon announced Friday it sent additional peacekeepers to the Lebanese border in response to rocket fire directed at Israel.

At least two rockets were fired from the general area of Qlaileh in south Lebanon, striking targets in northern Israel. There were no casualties reported in the exchange.

UNIFIL announced it was examining the situation, adding there were no further reports of volleys following the initial escalation.

"The Israeli army retaliated with artillery fire aimed at the area from where the rocket fire originated," read a UNIFIL statement. "The firing stopped shortly thereafter."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted the situation appeared to be in clear violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, which helped broker a cease-fire to the Israeli-Hezbollah war of 2006.

Resolution 1701 calls on Israel to respect Lebanese territory, while demanding Hezbollah lay down its weapons.

Beirut earlier this year filed a series of official complaints to the United Nations over alleged Israeli violations of its sovereignty, while Israel pointed to increased Hezbollah activity along the southern border of Lebanon.

UNIFIL said it was discussing the situation with both sides while coordinating additional deployments to the region with the Lebanese military to prevent escalation of the situation.
