TEHRAN, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Iran's military should prepare to meet the challenges in the threat environment of the 21st century, the nominee for defense minister said.
Ahmad Vahidi, chosen by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as his next defense minister, outlined his agenda as lawmakers wrapped up their vetting for the next Cabinet.
Vahidi said that if his nomination passed the Iranian Parliament, he would work hard to increase the logistical capabilities of the Iranian military based on the 21st century threat environment, the Mehr News Agency reports.
"I will do my utmost to try to provide the needs of armed forces to make them ready to repel any and all kinds of threats from enemies of the Islamic republic," he said, noting Israel was a particular defense concern to Iran.
Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar led Iran toward major military developments, adding stealth technology and long-range missiles to its arsenal.
The Vahidi nomination brought strong condemnations from the international community. He is wanted by Interpol for his role in the bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1994.
Iran denies his role in the bombings. It is expected lawmakers will approve his nomination.
