Iran: Enemy using psychological warfare

TEHRAN, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- The enemies of the Islamic republic continue to use psychological warfare as their favored method of attacking the country, Iranian police officials say.

Gen. Alireza Jazini, a deputy coordinator for the Iranian police, warned of the use of psychological warfare as a method of upsetting the local population, the semiofficial Fars News Agency reports.

"Inspiring disappointment and hopelessness as well as intimidation and fright are among the main goals of psychological operations," he warned.

He went on to say Iranian leaders and the general population must be aware of such plots targeting the country.

"To confront the enemy, threats should first be identified, remembering that social, political and cultural soft threats are of prime importance," he said.

Tehran blames foreign agents, from the British and American governments to anti-Iranian dissident groups, for encouraging violence in the post-election climate in Iran and meddling in internal affairs.

In June, street protests turned violent as government-backed forces clashes with demonstrators who were upset over the disputed victory of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the presidential elections.
