BAGHDAD, July 27 (UPI) -- NATO officials signed a bilateral accord with the government of Iraq to provide training to members of the Iraqi national security force.
Iraqi Defense Minister Abdul Qadir and NATO Deputy Secretary-General Claudio Bisogniero signed an agreement during the weekend for the coordination of training Iraqi security personnel.
NATO says the agreement is a "milestone" for cooperative measures between the Western security alliance and the government of Iraq.
"The agreement will provide the legal basis for NATO to continue with its mission to assist the government of the Republic of Iraq in developing further the capabilities of the Iraqi security forces," NATO said.
The announcement comes roughly one month after U.S. combat forces pulled out of Iraqi cities under the terms of a bilateral security agreement with Baghdad.
U.S. and Iraqi security forces are still navigating the operational terms of that security agreement while a small number of American troops remain deployed with Iraqi forces as part of an effort to help facilitate the transfer.
