SANAA, Yemen, July 16 (UPI) -- Yemeni forces increased their security presence around the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa as a preventive measure against a possible al-Qaida attack.

Al-Qaida is allegedly plotting an attack on U.S. embassies in nations belonging to the League of Arab States, notably in Yemen and Algeria, reports World Tribune, a global intelligence monitor.

More than 16 people were killed and several others were injured when two cars carrying suicide bombers and armed militants attacked the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa in 2008. The embassy reported none of its staff members were injured or killed in that attack.

The United States and its allies in the region have pressured the Yemeni government to crack down on al-Qaida militants operating on its soil.

Toward that effort, Yemeni courts this week sentenced six members of an al-Qaida outfit, dubbed the Tarim cell, to death and handed out lengthy prison terms to 10 other suspects involved in bombings at oil facilities and the U.S. and Italian embassies.

Meanwhile, Yemeni Vice President Abd al-Rab Mansur al-Hadi met with a British delegation this week to discuss regional security, praising the exchange of information on both sides in dealing with terrorist activities, especially al-Qaida.
