Beirut wants strong ties with Syria

BEIRUT, Lebanon, June 22 (UPI) -- Syria and Lebanon should work together to support bilateral relations, while Damascus recognizes Lebanese sovereignty, Future Movement lawmakers say.

Hadi Hobeich with the Future Movement said he hoped Syria would not intervene in Lebanese affairs, but welcomed continued bilateral discussions, the Lebanese Daily Star reports.

"We want to have the best relations with Syria," he said.

The Future Movement is the largest party in the Western-backed March 14 slate, which opposes Syrian involvement in domestic affairs. The party is led by Saad Hariri, son of slain former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Rafik Hariri was assassinated in a massive suicide bombing in February 2005. Many observers claim Syria played a role in the assassination.

Syria also played a large role in Lebanon in the decades leading up to the assassination.

March 14 won a surprise victory over the opposition March 8 slate in the June 7 parliamentary elections. Internal disputes since that election focus on external intervention in hammering out regional settlement issues and forming a unity government.

Hobeich also called for Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to have the ultimate say in settling disputes between the March 14 majority and opposition leaders.
