WASHINGTON, June 2 (UPI) -- The Department of Homeland Security announced it has filled two cybersecurity posts in a move to strengthen efforts to counter threats to U.S. networks.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has named Greg Schaffer, former chief risk officer for Alltel Communications, to the assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications post.

Napolitano also appointed Bruce McConnell as the counselor to the National Protection and Programs Directorate deputy undersecretary, the Homeland Security Department reported.

Schaffer and McConnell will report to Philip Reitinger, Homeland Security Department cyber chief, who Napolitano Monday named the director of the National Cybersecurity Center. Reitinger, as head of the National Cybersecurity Center, will support efforts to secure government networks and systems as part of a strategy to counter threats.

"This is a crucial time to strengthen the core of our cybersecurity leadership team," Napolitano said in a statement.

"Centralizing our cybersecurity efforts under Phil's leadership will help create a unified Homeland Security Department as we continue to adapt to an ever-changing array of threats. Together, Phil, Bruce and Greg will guide the Department's efforts to prevent cyber attacks and protect the nation's critical information systems and networks."
