DRESDEN, Germany, May 27 (UPI) -- Secret Service agents are screening Dresden for potential security threats before a visit by U.S. President Obama to the eastern Germany city next week.
The U.S. agents arrived in Dresden Monday and, together with German security authorities, have been screening the historic city center, German daily Bild reports.
Barack Obama, accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, is due to arrive in Dresden June 4. He will travel to eastern Germany directly from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the first pit stops of a larger foreign tour that will also take him to France.
The local media reports the president will lodge in a five-star hotel in Dresden's historic city center, near the famous Frauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady. Together with most of the city, the 18th century church was destroyed as a result of fierce and still controversial Allied fire bombing campaigns. It was rebuilt from 1995 until 2005 thanks to mostly private donors, including many from Britain and the United States.
The city has grand plans for Obama's visit. Bild reports Dresden will stage a public viewing party to welcome the president.
On June 5 Obama plans to visit the nearby Buchenwald concentration camp. The next day he is due to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France.
