UNIFIL gets cluster bomb data from Israel

UNITED NATIONS, May 14 (UPI) -- The U.N. mission in Lebanon received detailed maps from the Israeli military outlining positions where it had used cluster munitions over southern Lebanon.

The Israeli military received modest international criticism for its heavy-handed tactics in the 2006 conflict with Hezbollah forces.

Jerusalem was accused of using disproportionate force on non-Hezbollah targets and civilian-populated areas, and it also faced criticism over its use of cluster bombs.

Human Rights Watch reacted with outrage over Israel's use of cluster bombs but noted Hezbollah had also used the weapons during the conflict.

International conventions banning their use have been adopted and opened to signatures, but so far few supporters have come forward.

Farhan Haq, a U.N. spokesman, said the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon received strike data and military maps from Israeli forces on its use of cluster bombs, the U.N. news agency reports.

"UNIFIL will be handing over the data to the Lebanese Armed Forces," he added.

The U.N. Mine Action Coordination Center of South Lebanon estimates at least 20 people have been killed by unexploded cluster munitions, with 200 others maimed.
