TEHRAN, May 13 (UPI) -- Battles between Kurdish guerrillas and Iranian paramilitary forces in the West Azerbaijan province of Iran killed five militants and three Iranians.

Forces with the Basiji volunteer paramilitary group fought Kurdish militants as Iranian military operations in the region increase.

Iranian drones and military aircraft reportedly struck several Kurdish targets inside Iraq in recent days in operations against the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, and Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan, or PJAK.

The Iranian Press TV took aim at Washington's efforts to combat terrorism, saying it pledged to help Turkey defend itself from Kurdish guerrillas but offered assistance to PJAK rebels in the northwestern provinces of Iran.

Washington and several other nations list the PKK and PJAK as terrorist entities. Kurdish leaders in Iraq and the Turkish government, meanwhile, are considering separate efforts to help rein in Kurdish militants.
