Sri Lankan fighting tops CrisisWatch

BRUSSELS, May 4 (UPI) -- The Sri Lankan army's conflict with rebels and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the north of the country have topped the monthly CrisisWatch report.

The Belgium-based non-governmental organization International Crisis Group released its monthly report listing escalating conflict situations around the world. The report cited the ongoing violence in the north of Sri Lanka along with several other crisis situations that deteriorated in April, the Crisis Group reported.

The CrisisWatch report listed the fighting between the Sri Lankan army and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as a growing threat to the trapped civilian population. The situation continues to deteriorate for civilians in the no-fire zone, which is diminishing as the conflict rages on.

The report also listed the fragile political situation in Kenya, where talks between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have broken down into tense verbal attacks and a wave of violence.

Violent demonstrations in Thailand, fresh conflicts in Nepal and worsening situations in North Korea and Moldova also made the monthly CrisisWatch report.
