Hezbollah to abolish confessionalism

BEIRUT, Lebanon, April 7 (UPI) -- The platform of the Lebanese Hezbollah for the June parliamentary elections stresses resistance and the abolishing of the confessional political system.

Political parties in Lebanon kicked into high gear during the campaign season for the June elections. Several party leaders and slates unveiled their platforms in recent weeks. Analysts predict a tight race between the pro-Western March 14 coalition and the March 8 slate led by the Lebanese Hezbollah.

Hezbollah in its "Resist with Your Vote" platform called for measures to tackle the culture of corruption in the Lebanese political system, Lebanon's The Daily Star reports.

Mohammed Raad, the leader of Hezbollah's Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, said his party would abolish the confessional system by supporting "a balanced power that practices the law, respects freedom, administers public affairs and resolves economic and development problems."

The Lebanese system is a confessional system of democracy, whereby each subnational group participates in the government.

The Taif Agreement that ended the Lebanese civil war calls for an end to political sectarianism in Lebanon in order to recognize the demographic shift to a Muslim majority in the country, but it sets no timeframe on that move.

Raad added that his platform called for national unity, noting its alliance with the Free Patriotic Movement, a former March 14 member.

Some members of March 14 had expressed reservations over a government with Hezbollah in control.

Lebanon holds parliamentary elections June 7.
