Lebanon set to lower voting age

BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 19 (UPI) -- The Lebanese Parliament Thursday voted to lower the voting age to 18, but the changes will not be in place for the June parliamentary elections.

The voting age in Lebanon is set currently at 21, though lawmakers endorsed the measure set to go into force for the 2010 municipal elections, Lebanon's news agency Naharnet reports.

Hezbollah and its supporters had pushed for the measure as it would have an impact on their potential constituents.

Meanwhile, parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri said he would call for another session for lawmakers to examine possible corruption among lawmakers.

"Let no one think that this will be the last legislative session," he said.

The speaker later adjourned the session to March 26 because there were not enough lawmakers present in the Thursday session to address other issues.

Hassan Fadlallah with the Hezbollah Party, for his part, called on the government in Beirut to pass the measure, as it increases the number of potential voters significantly.

"The cabinet should promptly review the proposal, issue a law and then return the proposal to Parliament for adoption," he said.
