LYON, France, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Top officials from the United Nations and Interpol met Thursday in France to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation on countering transnational criminal groups.

Andrew Hughes, U.N. police adviser, met with Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble and other top Interpol officials Thursday to identify possible areas in which to strengthen ties. At the top of the list, Noble and Hughes discussed ways to collaborate on the ongoing threat of transnational organized crime, Interpol reported.

Central to the meeting was addressing the increased presence of narcotics traffickers in West Africa. The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime recently identified West Africa as a growing hub for transnational criminal groups to traffic drugs from the Caribbean to Europe.

Noble and Hughes also discussed ways Interpol and the United Nations could collaborate on supporting post-conflict regions, among other initiatives including "investigating genocide, war crimes and crimes that involve trafficking and border security," the release said.
