WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A new study has identified the state of biometric security capabilities for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to support counter-terrorism operations.

The study, conducted by the independent non-profit security analysis organization Mitre Corp., identified the baseline of the current state of biometric capabilities for the FBI.

The 10-month State-of-the-Art Biometrics Excellence Roadmap released Tuesday was part of an effort by the FBI Biometric Center of Excellence to establish a thorough understanding of the law enforcement biometric capabilities in the United States and help establish a plan for future requirements to meet security and counter-terrorism objectives, the FBI reported.

"The SABER study provides an excellent baseline for the various biometric modalities that will stimulate integration activities, as well as technology and data standards, across the biometric community," Gary Gagnon, Mitre vice president, said in a statement.

"The Biometric Center of Excellence, working in conjunction with the private sector, academia and other biometric centers within government, can advance the use of biometric technology in support of our national security mission."
