MOGADISHU, Somalia, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has deployed a Mobile Security Squadron to protect a replenishment oiler supporting the U.S. 5th Fleet in the volatile Gulf of Aden.

The Navy's Mobile Security Squadron 3 has been deployed to protect the Military Sealift Command Tippecanoe from the growing threat of pirates off the coast of Somalia, the Navy reported.

The Tippecanoe is currently supporting the Navy's 5th Fleet security and counter-terrorism operations in the Gulf of Aden. The Tippecanoe is part of the Navy's fleet of replenishment ships and can supply cargo, ammunition and fuel, among other requirements needed while operating at sea.

"We're embarked to provide maritime security and deter piracy attempts against Tippecanoe while the ship conducts its operations," Chief Master-at-Arms Eric Hancock, mission commander aboard Tippecanoe, said in a statement.

"Keeping 5th Fleet ships supplied allows them to remain at sea and provide invaluable support for coalition forces operating off the east coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden."
