ERBIL, Iraq, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The Kurdish premier and the first lady of Iraq, Hero Talabani, kicked off a ceremony in Erbil to mark a campaign advocating women's rights.
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani addressed a delegation in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, noting the challenges facing women in Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government said on its Web site.
"I am confident that we, the people of Kurdistan, will accept these changes," he said. "We can, with a new way of thinking, tackle these issues."
Jasim Mohammed Jaafar, the Iraqi minister of sports and youth, also spoke at the ceremony, saying violence against the innocent women of Iraq was an intolerable act.
"There is no place for brutality in our society," he said.
The annual campaign, "Yes to gender equality, no to violence," stresses gender equality and the prevention of violence against women and children.
