German lawmakers signs PMOI petition

BERLIN, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Members of the German Parliament signed a petition in support of the Iranian dissident group the People's Mujahedin of Iran.

A multiparty assembly of 150 lawmakers signed a petition calling for the removal of the PMOI from the EU list of terrorist organizations, the EUobserver noted. The signing comes as Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the political wing of the PMOI, paid a visit to Berlin to advocate for her organization.

The PMOI is listed by several nations as a terrorist group for its opposition to the Islamic Revolution in Iran. It advocates regime change to a democratic government in Iran.

"We demand that the German government, with the cooperation of the French EU presidency, removes this unjust label," the petition said. "The removal will serve the rule of law, show respect for the elected representatives of the people of Europe and address an urgent imperative for international peace."

The Committee of German Solidarity for a Free Iran developed the measure. The action follows similar moves in London and Paris, where NCRI is based.

A European court earlier this year said a 2002 decision to freeze PMOI assets based on its violent activity was illegal. The PMOI is confined to its enclave in Ashraf City in Iraq under U.S. military supervision.
