ERBIL, Iraq, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The prime minister of Iraqi Kurdistan hailed the launch of the Kurdistan News Agency in the wake of the passage of regional media protection laws.
Nechirvan Barzani, the prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, said the establishment of the agency, known as AK News, will play an important role in promoting an independent media in the region, the KRG said on its Web site.
"There is no doubt that today the establishment of the Kurdistan News Agency will play an important role in promoting the journalism that our society needs, an agency that will be professional and trustworthy," he said.
German media experts and members of the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur coordinated with Kurdish officials to launch the agency.
"I am very happy to see this agency open," said German journalist Jorgen Hopper, who played an active role in establishing AK News. "Democracy cannot exist without a free and independent press."
The KRG in September passed a measure to protect the rights of journalists in a law that promotes the foundation of accuracy in the media.
