VIENNA, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A top U.N. official met with Russian drug-control authorities Thursday to establish a cooperation framework on countering illicit drug trafficking.
Antonio Maria Costa, U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime executive director, met with Victor Ivanov, Russian Federal Drug Control Service director, on ways the United Nations and Russia could strengthen cooperation on combating transnational criminal groups trafficking narcotics out of Afghanistan and through Central Asia, the UNODC reported.
Russia, which has supported the 2003 Paris Pact initiative that coordinates counter-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan, has been working to train security officials in Central Asia on counter-narcotics methods and techniques.
Costa said Russia's effort to stem the flow of drugs from Afghanistan through Central Asia is a "clear demonstration of Russia's will to bolster security in Afghanistan and beyond its borders," Costa said in a statement.
Ivanov called Russia's ongoing partnership with the UNODC crucial for security in Central Asia.
