Mozambique ratifies nuclear treaty

MAPUTO, Mozambique, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Mozambique has joined 145 other countries banning nuclear explosions after ratifying the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty on Wednesday.

Mozambique announced in 2007 plans to review the CTBT among other international legal instruments. Government officials also began reviewing the Treaty of Pelindaba, which establishes a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Africa.

Mozambique adopted Pelindaba in March and on Wednesday announced it has ratified the CTBT, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization reported. CTBTO officials say the treaty, which bans nuclear weapons explosions, has now been ratified by 146 countries.

To enter into force, the CTBT still needs to be ratified by another nine countries listed in the treaty's Annex Two, which include China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States, the release said.
