WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The National Nuclear Security Administration has published an updated plan on modernizing the U.S. nuclear weapons complex.

The NNSA has published a final Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement in the U.S. federal register. Officials say the updated SPEIS was an effort to create a plan that modernizes the nuclear weapons complex to address evolving U.S. security interests and requirements, the NNSA reported.

"We need to move NNSA from an outdated, Cold War nuclear weapons complex to one that is better able to support our future national security needs," NNSA Administrator Thomas D'Agostino said in a statement.

A draft version of the SPEIS plan received 20 public hearings to discuss its merits. Officials say the newly updated SPEIS will continue the NNSA transformation of the nuclear weapons complex.
