LYON, France, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Lithuania announced plans to send a police officer to Interpol's General Secretariat in France to represent the country and strengthen cooperation.
Lithuanian Police Commissioner General Vizgirdas Telycenas and other top security authorities from the country recently met with Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble at Interpol Headquarters in France. Telycenas announced plans to second a police officer from Lithuania to represent the country at Interpol's General Secretariat, Interpol reported.
Officials say the Lithuanian security official, expected to be sent in early 2009, is part of a move by Lithuania to establish stronger ties with Interpol to combat transnational criminal elements and other threats. Telycenas said the meeting was also an initiative to expand Lithuania's access to Interpol's international databases.
The decision is "another clear demonstration of (Lithuania's) commitment to supporting international law enforcement cooperation," Noble said in a statement.
