U.N. extends security mandate in Haiti

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Despite moderate political progress, ongoing threats to Haiti's security have prompted the U.N. Security Council to renew its mandate in the country.

The Security Council voted unanimously Tuesday to extend the U.N. mission in Haiti, or MINUSTAH, for another year.

Government leaders in the country have been able to move beyond several months of political deadlock and rally behind new Prime Minister Michele Pierre-Louis. Despite the positive signs from government leaders, months of debilitating hurricanes and the presence of transnational criminal networks continue to threaten security in Haiti.

"The continued deployment of MINUSTAH remains indispensable," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wrote in a recent report.

"As was clear during the April riots, the mission security components continue to play a critical role in ensuring the country's stability."
