KAMPALA, Uganda, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A U.N. report says there has been a dramatic surge of rebel violence in Uganda resulting in the death of more than 200 civilians.
The U.N. Human Rights Office, jointly with the U.N. peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, released a report on a recent fact-finding mission that says attacks since mid-September led by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army have resulted in the deaths of as many as 221 people. Officials say up to 159 of those executed were children, the United Nations reported.
"In all localities that suffered attacks, the Lord's Resistance Army elements conducted a campaign of killing, systematic abduction of children, and burning of almost all houses," the report said.
The United Nations says the attacks, in the village of Dungu, have forced thousands to flee the region because of widespread fear of being either killed or abducted.
