New law helps bust counterfeiters

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Europol has taken down a counterfeiting operation in the Netherlands by exercising a new legal provision that integrates local police authorities.

Europol acted on a provision to request EU states to conduct a criminal investigation and operation that Tuesday resulted in the arrest of two suspects involved in a counterfeiting operation, Europol reported.

Officials say Europol requested the Dutch National Police to investigate an illicit print shop where counterfeit 50 euro banknotes were produced. The Dutch National Police raided two locations in The Hague where two suspects were arrested.

"The successful operation in The Hague proved the added value of the amended legal framework and of the overall organization in the European area of freedom, security and justice," Max-Peter Ratzel, Europol director, said in a statement.
