BAGHDAD, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia and Iraq agreed, as part of a joint effort at restoring diplomatic ties, to an exchange of detainees held in custody in Riyadh and Baghdad.

Riyadh handed over 16 Iraqi detainees in exchange for eight Saudi nationals held in Baghdad, the Iranian Press TV reported.

A significant number of foreign fighters in Iraq are from Saudi Arabia, the report said. Foreign fighters have been battling U.S. forces and Iraqi soldiers loyal to the Shiite-led government since 2003.

Saudi officials speaking to the state-run Saudi Press Agency on condition of anonymity said the exchange was part of an extradition treaty signed by both countries to restore formal diplomatic relations.

Muwaffaq al-Rubaie, the Iraqi national security adviser, disclosed earlier this year that there were around 100 Saudi nationals in Iraqi custody, with about 50 more in U.S. military prisons in Iraq.

Saudi Arabia, a predominately Sunni country, has been at loggerheads with the Shiite government of Iraq.
