UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The head of the U.N. General Assembly called on the international community in New York Thursday to increase cooperation to better counter global terrorism.

During a meeting Thursday to review the U.N. global counter-terrorism strategy, Srgjan Kerim, president of the U.N. General Assembly, said more work needs to be done to combat terrorist networks. He said countries -- along with the United Nations -- need "step up" efforts, the United Nations reported.

Kerim said the evolving complexity of countering terrorism requires a "new way of thinking" to enable greater cooperation around the world.

"By finding gaps and identifying where further assistance is needed, we can build closer cooperation between member states and the United Nations system," Kerim said in a statement.

"Let us all demonstrate that the strategy has brought us closer together to counter this scourge. Only with a strong resolve we can achieve a safer world for all."
