U.N. fortifies buildings in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- U.N. agencies in Islamabad have fortified their offices throughout the city with blast walls amid a heightened threat of terrorist activity.

Offices for the World Food Program and UNICEF have erected security walls and fortified their compounds with sand bags and other security measures, The Daily Times of Pakistan reported Wednesday.

Most of the U.N. offices in the area are converted homes. The move comes from the recommendations of U.N. security officials who visited the region following a July suicide attack at the Danish Embassy.

An adjacent U.N. office was damaged from the blast that killed at least five people.

A Pakistani Senate committee in April issued a request to U.N. officials to move their presence to a diplomatic enclave to ensure the civilian population in the area was not affected by any terrorist activity targeting the missions.

U.N. officials responded that confining international activity to one area posed a greater security risk than a dispersed presence.

Gunmen targeted a U.S. diplomat Tuesday following the breakup of the ruling coalition government, prompting concern over the direction of counter-terrorism policy in Pakistan.
