Tehran considers U.K. relations over PMOI

TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Iranian lawmakers Monday called on the national government to review its relationship with the United Kingdom for its stance on the People's Mujahedin of Iran.

The European Union, the United States and several other nations list the PMOI as a terrorist organization for its militant activity prior to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, though several countries are reconsidering that status.

British legislators in June supported a May court decision to remove the group from its list of terrorist organizations.

The National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian Parliament called the decision a tacit approval of terrorist groups in Iraq following a meeting with the Iranian envoy to London, Rasoul Movahedian, the Tehran Times said.

"Britain's decision on the PMOI is a step toward supporting terrorism and promoting terrorist acts in the region," Iranian lawmakers said.

The U.S. military provides protection for the PMOI stronghold in Ashraf City north of Baghdad in Diyala province.

The group claims protection under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
