TBILISI, Georgia, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Friday announced its full support for stabilizing Georgia after its recent conflict with Russia.
OSCE Chairman in Office and Finland Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb traveled to Georgia to assist in an international monitoring effort to ensure the European Union-brokered cease-fire was fully implemented. Ending his trip Friday, Stubb said the OSCE is "strongly committed" to stabilizing Georgia and the region.
While in Georgia, Stubb met with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and other top officials to address three goals: increasing the strength of the monitoring operation, monitoring the cease-fire agreement and further incorporating the international community's involvement in the situation.
Stubb said, "OSCE monitors will contribute to reducing tensions, easing the humanitarian crisis and encouraging further political dialogue to find a longer-term solution to the conflict," the release said.
