Former ULFA chief addresses rally

DISPUR, India, July 10 (UPI) -- Expelled members of the United Liberation Front of Assam addressed supporters at a public forum in India's Assam state to generate backing for a peace plan.

ULFA is a militant group considered a terrorist organization by the Indian government. It seeks an independent northern state of Assam.

Earlier this week former ULFA Commander Mrinal Hazarika and 2nd Lt. Jeten Dutta announced a unilateral cease-fire with the Assam government. ULFA Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa called the move unconstitutional, ejecting them and a third official, Joon Sonowal, from the organization.

Hazarika told those assembled at the Thursday meeting that the leadership of ULFA should "rethink" its decision as the cease-fire was the best way to peace, India's Sahara Samay News Network reported.

Hazarika also said there would be another public meeting Friday at the historic Rang Ghar amphitheater, where the organization held its founding ceremony in 1979.
