OTTAWA, July 7 (UPI) -- The Canadian government has announced the release of more than $20 million to fund efforts to counter terrorist threats.

The funds, available under Canada's chemical, biological, radiological-nuclear and explosives research and technology initiative, are part of an effort to enhance public safety through strategic development of science and technology solutions, Canadian National Defense reported.

Peter MacKay, Canadian minister of national defense, said the call for proposals is a move to fulfill the government's commitment to strengthening the security posture of Canada.

The minister of public safety in Canada, Stockwell Day, said up to $24.5 million in funds would go to support protecting Canadians.

"Our government is determined to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of Canadians against terrorism," Day said in a statement.

"The government and people of Canada benefit greatly from the unique science and technology solutions delivered through this research and technology initiative as we continue our efforts to protect Canadians."
