CASERTA, Italy, July 1 (UPI) -- Italian police conducted a massive raid Tuesday, arresting 30 alleged members of mafia gangs connected to crimes including attempted murder and extortion.

The arrests were of the Camorra, the Neapolitan Mafia, and occurred in the province of Caserta in Italy's Campania region. Arrests were also made in Rome and Florence among other locations.

Officials say Paolo Schiavone, nephew of the jailed mafia boss Francesco Schiavone, was among those arrested, according to Adnkronos.

Italian police also issued more than 30 arrest warrants in a move targeting the 'Ndrangheta mafia gang in Calabria and carried out a third operation against alleged Mafia gang members around the Sicilian port city of Syracuse.

"Those arrested face charges of attempted murder, extortion, drug trafficking, running illegal gambling dens, and illegal possession of firearms and explosives," Adnkronos reported.
