BAGHDAD, June 25 (UPI) -- Iran has no interest in interfering with the progress of the status of forces agreement between Iraq and the United States, an Iranian official said Wednesday.
Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Kazemi Qomi said Wednesday in Baghdad that Iran respects the sovereignty of Iraq in the pending long-term security arrangement with Washington, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Qomi said despite doubts from Tehran regarding the U.S. intent in the country, a secure and stable Iraq would pave the way toward peace in the entire region.
The ambassador said instability, however, only cloaked the real intentions of the United States for seeking a long-term military presence in Iraq.
He also emphatically denied allegations that Iran is funneling weapons to so-called special groups in Iraq, saying the claims are contrary to Iranian foreign policy.
"We have announced time and again that if they have any evidences to substantiate their claims, they should show them to the Iraqi people, but the U.S. has failed to do so by this time," he said.
