TOKYO, June 11 (UPI) -- The top official at Interpol has outlined plans to engage the G8 countries at the upcoming meeting in Tokyo to fight transnational organized crime.
Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble says any success in the global fight against transnational organized crime relies on the contributions from the Group of Eight countries. Noble plans to emphasize the role the G8 countries play at the three-day G8 Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial Meeting that begins Wednesday, Interpol reported.
The annual meeting brings together the leaders of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and Russia, along with the European Union's commissioner for justice, freedom and security, and Interpol's secretary-general.
Noble announced plans to call on the G8 countries to "actively support national law enforcement forces in reaching out for the global tools developed by Interpol to combat organized crime," the release said.
Officials say Noble will encourage the G8 countries to incorporate Interpol's new database on international intellectual property crime, along with databases on DNA profiles, fingerprints and stolen vehicles, in order to increase efforts against transnational criminal networks.
