CAIRO, May 27 (UPI) -- Concerns about an extension of emergency law in Egypt prompted Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to say the granted authority will only be used to fight terrorism.

Nazif, speaking before an Egyptian People's Assembly session, said that President Hosni Mubarak's recent decree to extend emergency law for two years is necessary to maintain stability and security in the country.

Critics say the emergency law infringes on personal freedoms. Nazif said authority granted under the law will only be used to combat terrorism and protect citizens, the Egyptian government reported.

Nazif additionally said the extension of the emergency law will end when an anti-terror law is enacted.

"Underway preparations for the anti-terror law, which will replace the emergency law, come in implementation of President Hosni Mubarak's promises to end the state of emergency," Nazif said in a statement.

Nazif said as a result of the emergency law, several terrorists have been arrested and Egypt is more secure.
