Israelis arrest Iran-trained terrorist

JERUSALEM, May 21 (UPI) -- Israeli defense officials announced the arrest of a suspected terrorist who participated in a militant training camp in Iran.

Israel's internal security agency, Shin Bet, revealed Monday that it recently captured former Fatah operative Ala Abu Madif in the village of Karara in the southern Gaza Strip. Officials say Abu Madif participated in attacks on Israel with rockets, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

After more than a month of interrogations, Israeli defense officials announced Abu Madif's arrest, which occurred on April 15. The interrogations revealed Abu Madif's participation in a monthlong military training camp in Iran in May 2007.

Abu Madif allegedly left Gaza through the Rafah crossing into Egypt and then was flown to Damascus, Syria. He then traveled to Iran for the terrorist military training, which included light and heavy weapons operation along with training on anti-tank weapons, among other militant indoctrination.

Officials say Abu Madif returned to Gaza after Hamas staged its takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007. Since then, Abu Madif "participated in a series of rocket attacks against Israel, and agreed on two separate occasions to participate in a suicide bombing attack against Israel Defense Forces at the Kissufim crossing," the release said.
