OSLO, Norway, May 6 (UPI) -- The United Nations is calling on the international community to refocus attention on South Sudan to increase security and aid for the region.

U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro, speaking at the third meeting of the Sudan Consortium in Norway, said that the international community needs to increase efforts in South Sudan to improve "security and living standards, rebuild infrastructure, advance disarmament and demobilization, strengthen the rule of law, and to create secure conditions in the country," the United Nations reported.

The Sudan Consortium, established in 2005 after the comprehensive peace agreement in Sudan was signed, is an effort to bring governments and civil society organizations from around the world together to support Sudan, which endured more than 20 years of civil war.

Despite some improvements in South Sudan, "it is opportune that ... we return here once again to energize our efforts in support of the CPA," Migiro said in a statement. "Much more needs to be done. A unique but narrow window of opportunity exists, which, if grasped, can help Sudan … achieve a lasting and broad-based peace."
