CASABLANCA, Morocco, May 2 (UPI) -- Moroccan police have arrested a terrorist fugitive who recently escaped jail while serving a 20-year sentence for his involvement in a suicide bombing.
Moroccan police confirmed the arrest of 34-year old Mohammed Chatbi who was involved in the May 2003 suicide bombing in Casablanca which killed 45 people. Chatbi was serving a 20 year prison sentence when he escaped on April 7 from a jail near Rabat, Morocco. Interpol had issued a global security alert for Chatbi and the eight other prisoners who escaped from the jail, Interpol reported.
"The Moroccan authorities are to be commended for the arrest of this dangerous terrorist whose actions were responsible for the violent deaths of dozens of innocent people," Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said in a statement.
"Through close cooperation, Morocco and Interpol were able to quickly alert police and border control officers, as well as the general public, about the threat posed by these escaped terrorists."
Officials say the other eight men remain at large.
