HELSINKI, Finland, May 2 (UPI) -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is again calling for restraint after an unmanned aerial vehicle was recently shot down over Georgia.
OSCE Chairman-in-Office Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb is warning against escalating tensions after the UAV drone was shot down over Abkhazia, Georgia and recent military buildup in the region, the OSCE reported.
Additionally Russia's decision to establish official ties with South Ossetia and Abkhazia, breakaway regions of Georgia unrecognized internationally, has prompted warning calls from European and other Western leaders. Officials say Russia's move could potential undermine the already unstable situation in the region.
Stubb says the developments in Georgia are cause for serious concern and that the issue needs to become a top priority.
"All parties should refrain from unilateral measures and threats to use military force," Stubb said in a statement. "I appeal to the parties to re-engage in negotiations aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The OSCE stands ready to provide assistance in confidence-building and to promote the peace process."
